i purchased this phone july this year (2012), saw it on your site and thought what a nice looking phone, never had an android phone before, had sony ericson phone (cyber-shot) before, for years, no problem what so ever, my opinion something has gone wrong at sony, the days when they used to make objects that lasted, is over, if you buy this phone, you are looking for trouble, it never stops freezing and i have sent it to the manufactures to be resolved, but keep getting the same problem, its december now and i have had enough, 6 months, im going back to my old phone which still works and has never had to be repaired.

Xperia Ray has performed well - only problem has been the inability of the dictionary to pick up on new words so it loses a star but to be fair this could be the android software which is hardly the phone's fault. Otherwise excellent but using lots of internet does use the juice up so will only last a day with lots of online time. Overall - very happy

Bought to replace ageing HTC Wildfire and is a good upgrade at a reasonable price. This is a phone for people who don't need to constantly view and use their phone but want something slim / compact that works well when needed. Main points are;

- Good interface with android 2.3.
- Bright high quality screen that you can see in bright daylight (just)
- Expandable memory for many photo's / songs but needs good quality micro-SD card - apparently not on latest new sony range. Great MP3 player capable of storing all but largest collections.
- Works well as a phone!
- Battery life OK for a smart phone but you can buy a spare battery and keep it charged in your pocket / bag. Probably keep you going for a couple of days. You can also buy a cheap stand alone battery charger on ebay for the spare battery.
- standard USB charging.
- Can speak to Mac's for data transfer. Get Sony Bridge for Mac.
- Has the capability to be used as Wifi hotspot allowing a tablet / laptop to access the internet. --NB not all sim card providers will let you do this.
- As others have noted has 3.5mm headphone socket that seems to only work with earphones with three black rings on the plug. Good quality headphones supplied but with strange inflexible cord that will not appeal to all. Cheap replacement available by searching sony in ear headphones on amazon. Look for those that are for Xperia range. Mine cost me £3.50 and work well and have conventional cord.
- Good camera (for a phone) which works well in daylight.
- get a free torch app and it works very well as a bright standby torch using the camera flash. Will get you home and light the dark cupboard.
- It has an irritating division of memory which results in not being able to store too many apps on the phone itself. Some apps can be transferred to memory card but many can't . It's even more irritating because the pre-loaded apps that you may not use (facebook etc) themselves take up a lot of memory but can't be removed without rooting the phone which potentially voids the warranty. Sorry Sony it's a star deduction as you did not have to configure in this way.
- GPS is not as good as stand alone Garmin etc but perfectly adequate for occasional use with free google Maps.
- Decent FM radio.
- For those with low text typing skills mine came with great predictive text app for sliding finger over keyboard. My typing is hopeless but I can now text a paragraph in seconds.
- Cheap protective skins available on ebay which protect but don't add to bulk.
- Have a look at Giffgaff as sim card provider --£10 p/m inc unlimited internet with plenty of minutes and texts
- Unlocked so you can buy a local sim card when abroad
- Good upgrade choice for some-one moving up from a trusted Nokia / Sony candybar.
- My top tip ; Get free Gesture Search app and put on homescreen. Draw the first initial of your contact on the screen and up comes the contact and number.Press to connect.

Many other good reviews here and on You- tube and the tech sites. Phone, MP3 player, video , FM radio, camera, photo and video player. torch, GPS, mini computer, voice recorder, and internet connection. Currently available much cheaper on Sony's own site. Buy now before is disappears.

Purchased through amazon warehouse deal. Selected this phone based on the reviews which praised about its exceptional battery life. But I was disappointed when the battery drained out in less than 10 hours for the first few days. I mentioned this to amazon customer care and they were glad to send me a new battery. I appreciate the customer service.
The new battery was 1500 mAh compared to older one (1450 mAh). Now it gives me around 13 hours battery which is not so satisfactory as well. All this even after disabling background data traffic, automatic sync, wifi and other background apps. The touchpad is also a bit too small for my fingers in portrait mode. And typing in landscape mode is not comfortable. The phone should have been a bit more wider.
But I am quite happy with the other features like 8MP camera, music and picture quality. The headphones are really good compared to other brands.
Verdict: All said and done, you will certainly have to charge this phone twice a day to enjoy all its features !!!

This is a very good mobile phone to consider if you're looking for a small smartphone. It has virtually everything that the big alternatives (Galaxy Note, S3, S2 etc) have, but in a beautifully crafted compact package. The screen is based on the Sony Bravia technology and is really sharp. With Android 2.3 installed, the touchscreen is very responsive. Web browsing is a delight to use. The battery lasts roughly two days with moderate use. There are one or two drawbacks that the Xperia Ray does have in my opinion. Firstly, when using the Calendar, the display of the text that you enter for a particular appointment/time is too small. I get over this by using the Business Calendar app which has adjustable font sizes. Secondly, the maximum volume in the hands-free mode is too low when used for telephone calls. You have to hold the phone about a foot from your face to hear it comfortably. And finally, the size of the keyboard may be too small for those with big hands/fingers. Apart from those drawbacks, this is a really excellent phone. And it's available for less than £200. Check out TechRadar's review of this phone (they give it 4.5 stars out of 5). That's a fair assessment in my opinion.

I'm a Sony phone guy... I cant use any other phones and the ones i've tried have all broken on me or glitched out.

This ray i've been using for about 6 months now and I cant fault anything about it, It's a sleek design, and very decent for the cost.

May have to get another one just in case I do manage to break this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good phone, nice and small, great camera, though limited internal memory, 16 July 2012

I'm pretty happy with the phone.

The big pro of this phone is the camera (8MP, very good quality), which is rare given its price and size. It also does everything you'd expect of a recent android phone.

The negatives are its limited internal memory and lag:
- After 20 or so app installs you have to start moving everything to the SD card to avoid it using up its internal memory. And even then not everything can be moved to the SD card (for example most google apps) to it's easy to approach the limit. This will get tiresome.
- To keep it running smoothly you need to remove most widgets. These seem to really slow it down.

Only other thing worth mentioning is that because the screen is so small the keyboard can be hard to type on (with accuracy), but you get used to this.

Not sure if any of the above will change if and when Sony sends me the update to ICS.

PS. When I purchase it was significantly cheaper on the Sony Store, but it was such a headache using their payment system (blocked card etc) I eventually gave up and used Amazon
