The best thing about this phone is certainly its waterproof ability.However, Motorola is not satisfying at all. Their software team is so bad that created the stupid BLUR thing and it's useless but make your phone lag. And I believe the latest android you can get from them is gingerbread (2.3) while it is obviously capable to run ICS(4.0)+. The repair service is also dissappointing. I sent it back 4 times and the only problem I had was still not resolved. I have already sold this phone after 1 year usage.
But I would still recommend this phone because I think it is very rare to have the same problem as I did because I purchased very early and they made some changes on hardware and probably resolved the problem during manufacturing. Also the phone can be brilliant if you flash a CyanogenMod or some other better ROMs and I definitely missed the waterproof feature on my new HTC. Sorry I won't recommend any phone from the other manufacturer which makes brilliant waterproof smartphones just because the country it comes from. LOL!!

I had this phone on contract with T mobile1st phone lasted 2 weeks then ear piece went - swapped out
2nd phone lasted a couple of months - ear piece went 2 week wait for repair!
2nd phone comes back lasts a couple of months more - problem returns - 2 week wait
2nd phone comes back same issue almost immediately - t mobile agree to replace the phone - with another defy :-(
3rd phone seems to be OK for about 6 months - ear piece goes - i'm sick of waiting 2 weeks to repair it so I replace the ear piece myself - voiding warranty
3rd phone goes through another ear piece about a month later lol
3rd phone has a bug (well documented) with google maps - Motorola (who are awful with updates) don't care about this bug - the bug makes google maps crash the phone - i get sick of it and root it to get around this (there is a tweak you can do)
3rd phone - i smash the screen by accident - replace it myself (seeing as it is already out of warranty)
3rd phone on charge - randomly starts boot looping - cannot get it to start - gets progressively worse it now says 'Code corrupt' when turning it on- assume this is hardware problem with memory inside from reading around - its a brick!
3 months left on my contract - I won't be choosing T mobile again, I won't be choosing a Motorola again either
I will get a sim free phone and PAYG or pay monthly sim.
I know some might be thinking that rooting it could potentially cause this issue - I agree - however I do not have time to send my phone back to T mobile each time for 2 weeks! the nearest Tmobile store is 15miles away too! thats a lot of fuel/parking fees that I have had to incur to own what is now an out of date mediocre phone.
The good bits were:
The screen was sharp - still is in comparison to other lower end devices - processor was above others spec when I chose it, had a bigger screen than others at the time and is waterproof (supposedly)
To summarise I would not recommend this phone unless you are a glutton for punishment and enjoy using the freebee loan phones that phone companies give you whilst the phone is in for repair.

As a 'normal' smartphone the Defy isn't too bad: the good points more or less cancel out the bad. The camera is ok in bright sunlight, but pretty poor in low light conditions. The phone's not laggy: I've played some quite hardware intensive games on it and it copes well, no problems with frame rates or anything, but there is a problem with storage - it frequently tries to store things on the full SD card instead of in the not at all full internal memory. The touch-screen is ok normally, but just gives up responsiveness if you get it wet - which makes the fact that it's waterproof a bit less useful. Motoblur is ok though not as amazing as Motorola make out. It uses quite an old version of Android which is a shame. The torch is quite bright. The battery life is very good but the slider holding the back of the phone in place does occasionally slip across by itself, which is not so good. The GPS is pretty quick to pick up satellites, but not quite as accurate as it could be.However, I chose this phone primarily because it's supposed to be tough. I wanted a phone that didn't have to be 'handled with care'. The phone fell once from about hip hight and the screen smashed into a spider's web of cracks.
If you want a sturdy phone, don't buy this one.

I got this Defy and got water inside. Warranty all of a sudden was no valid, since it doesn't cover internal damage by water.Then, sensitivity of the screen is not very good and size of keyboard is small for any finger.

As my first smartphone I owned a Defy for about 6 months before leaving it on a train :( I've replaced it with a Sony Xperia Active and this is my review based on my experience with these two phones. So, the Defy then...GOOD
* Robust. Dropped several times. Got wet several times. Generally abused in pockets and rucksacks, up mountains and down caves. Scuffed corners and tiny scratches on the screen. Very pleased with general robustness.
* The screen is large for such a small phone and the screen coating sheds greasy fingerprints well. It is generally bright and easy to read.
AVERAGE
* Battery cover clip gets looser with time
* Battery life works out at about two days of light use. Recharges quickly.
* Not overly sensitive touch screen
* Port covers not brilliant, occasionally pop out. (especially compared with the Xperia)
* Poor camera quality, partly due to small lens
* Motoblur - bit of a gimmick and not that useful
BAD
* Speed. This loses the Defy a whole star. Numerous times when swiping the unlock bar I had to wait several seconds before the unlock pattern screen was presented. Facebook took ages to load. Anything computationally intensive resulted in a long wait.
* Software Reliability. Loses another star for this. Wi-Fi was sketchy and slow generally. Occasional crashes and reboots are common. Responsiveness to user input gets progressively worse
Summary
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On balance, I would not recommend this phone to a friend.
There are other phones that are cheaper and/or faster. If you are looking for a rugged phone I've been using the Sony Xperia Active for a couple of weeks and I'm very taken with it. Much faster, more reliable software and just as well built.
I am gonna be up the front, I was going to buy the newest version 'till I discovered it has less internal memory than the previous one. but in fact I am happy. The phone is a good piece of engineering, its screen is nice enough and living in Scotland the waterproof feature is extremely useful, specially as my old phone passed away because was humid inside(never sank but couldn't cope with the raining in Edinburgh)Drawbacks: its gps does not wok any good, at the beginning was very nice but the system was getting old so fast while I was downloading programs and no I cannot use it as a navigator.The headset was nice 'till failed two weeks after buying it.The battery is not god but I have a lot of apps which run even after closing them so I am sure it will last the whole day with people less demanding.The Facebook app is terrible for the battery life and I have had to use facebook trough the Opera browser,Skype it is so heavy for the phone so the system crashes if I trynna use this program and hear music at the same time, though I can use it to call abroad with no problems.I do not like at all the calendar which was the only one feature linked to the old mobiles times before apple and Androids.
However, it does too much for its price.It is provided with android 2.2 and is able to run lots of program, angry birds, bar scanner, opera browser, my bus Edinburgh,games and so on. Each of them runs properly and it doesn't tell you please move the program to the sd card 'cause its 2gb internal memory can cope with a demanding user. I bought a 16mb sd so is plenty of memory for songs videos and films, btw its gps is disappointing bit the hotspot works perfectly and quickly, and it really provides me internet for my netbook everywhere (if I have the charger with me) so if you are thinking to buy a htc wildfire no way! take that one and you will be able to play angry birds. The phone in fact works sometimes slowly but I should say that in part is my fault as I have downloaded more programs upon it than to my laptop and the poor phone in fact does 80 % out of I would do with a proper Android top frame or I-phone.
I bought it as my old phone a Samsung jet broken down 4 month before the finish of my contract so it was meant as a temporal spare phone until I can get a new one trough my mobile provider but its quality has given me reason to avoid the change at least for this year, I was given more than I expected what else can you say for something nowadays.
Had the phone for around a year... really good overall for standard use.All the good points are stated from others reviewers and it is a seriously fantastic phone for the money... i'll just go to the points that can be improved on & what buyers would be wary of:
- Camera: supposedly 5MP, yet it's struggling to live upto the VGA camera from my previous phone.
- Software: There won't ever be anymore software updates launched from Motorola, for this make and model.
The only way you can get them is by rooting (which Voids warranty btw) and go through the lengthy process of manually installing them.
- Apps in general: Many keep running in the background automatically after force closing them from the settings panel, ( such as Cardio Trainer, Google Maps, Google Play, Facebook (even after signing out force closing and deleting all data) Google Search, My Location) etc.. and a few more, which does kill the battery, hence why i've had to buy an upgraded, 3500mah battery. They need to launch updates to fix these types of issues.. yet they've given up on all updates.
- Touch Buttons: Touch screening in general is really, really, really good, the one annoying thing i can think of though is the fact the Home button WILL eventually stop working for no good reason after a few months, happened to everyone I know who has one, which basically means you have to tap return back through to the Home screen.
- Ruggedness: Well after seeing someone on internet stab their screen with a fork, and nothing happened, i thought i'd do the same, i've dropped it many times onto concrete and it's still absolutely fine.
Overall I know, i've listed all bad points... but the good ones are all stated, and this are the only problems you may likely encounter over time, However, this is honestly the best Android phone I have ever had based on the price range.. it honestly does compete within the regions of iPhone's and many new Androids in general. Seriously worth buying.
