This is the first smart phone I have owned, steering clear before, as I work outside in conditions that phones really don't like, dust, wet, constantly being banged or dropped.
As the choice of non smartphones has become very limited the time had come to find something that was suitable for my line of work.
Many of the phones on offer are far too big and after trying my wife's samsung to sensitive and fiddly.
The Motorola looked the best option as it was dust proof, waterproof and a little more robust than a lot.
I have now had the phone for about a month and it has performed exceptionally well. Signal strength is good. Quality of calls is very good. It is easy to use some people wont like the fact that to use the screen you first press the on button, which is a little small especially with cold hands then slide the screen, but this does stop you from making unwanted calls, which must be a problem with some phones, by the number of calls I get from people that don't know they have rung.
Now I am more use to the phone have added some extra apps these are great but did add a couple that caused phone to freeze, removed those and phone worked excellently.
Battery life is not as good as the standard phones but you do tend to use it more but switch off internet etc and battery is adequate.
Overall very good especially for the cost.

slightly smaller than some smart phones but it performs equally well and the maps are very good. it fits the pocket easily and with the rubberised back is safer to handle. up to now it does everything I ask it to.

Motorole Defy +
My husband brought this phone and it is rubbish, after setting it all up, after a week starting shutting itself down all the time, sent it back to Motorola returned and after ages setting it up again , when listening to callers thay couldn't hear him, sent it back to Motorola who had it for two weeks and sent it back hoping three times lucky.
He brought it for work but is not impressed thought about selling it on and buying the Galaxy only to find will only get £40 which says a lot about the phone.
Has the phone two monthes which Motorola had it for 2/3 rds of this.Motorola Defy + Sim-Free Smartphone

Overlooked by the fashion zombies who must have THE phone, the defy is intelligent in design and function. It's also proving to be rugged as claimed, one year on it still functions as it should despite living on building sites. Seriously worth consideration, although might be worth seeing if an updated model is in the pipeline ?

Well I ordered it then saw on the invoice it was being sent from HongKong, instant concern, but to be fair it arived much faster than expected, about four days.
On unpacking it I was confronted with the box and quickstart guide in French, personaly not an issue for me as I do French pasably and I have comon sence too.
So It was soon on charge and english selected in the menu.

The phone its self is cool.
Its small and quite lite in the hand, but still retains a decent size screen larger than my friends iphone lol.
Motoblur needs to be setup befor anything else can be done with the phone but this only took a few minutes using the phone folowing on screen prompts, its a realy intuative phone to use.

With the basic functions running the battery last about three days, but run all the aps buzzers and bells and it needs recharging every night, again nothing unusual for a smart phone.

The camera is plenty good enough at 5mp for my needs and the video quality is good for vga, any more and I would be using my nikon or my wp videocam.

It may not be a Galaxy S3 but it dose much the same and I can use it in the rain, up a mountain or in my canoe without worrying about it sufering, I have even used it with hands caked in mud and had to rinse it in a puddle to see the screen half way through an email, try that with an iphone lol.

There is lots I could say about it but nothing that hasnt been covered already in other reviews so to summerise,,,,
My one and only gripe is that i cant get a stylus to work on the screen "perhaps due to the gorilla glass" and my fingers tend to hit several buttons at the same time when typing even with the phone held sideways to enlarge the keys as much as possible.
This is quite a common problem for me though and no reflection on the phone its self, I just have clunky great fingers.

Knowing what i know now after having used and abused it for a week, I would buy this phone again tomorrow.

If you want a smart phone and you want something that will deal with water mud bumps and nocks this is the one.

My original review has been superceeded as along with a sizeable subset of these phones I am suffering from continual reboots of this phone when making or receiving phone calls making it absolutely useless as a phone.

This phone competes ok in the price bracket.

Android Build
I was a little worried about switching to motorola who do not have as much experience with android as other manufacturers. The Android build is 2.3.6 which will do everything you need including wireless hotspot. I was very pleasently surprised at the motorola build tweaks. It has a much better keyboard layout and operation than Samsung, the built in task manager has the ecxellent feature of selectable app killing after screen timeout. The best tweak is the ability to link the notification volume to the same level as the ringer, allowing the user to use the main volume switch for everything. Samsung and HTC could learn alot from this.

Phone Build
The Phone is fairly solid but feels small and light in the hand. The search touch button is easily caught (which is why HTC have a space at the bottom). The 3.5mm jack and USB sockets are blocked by a plasic plug. OK initially to keep the water out bur after repeated used may break off or loose their seal. The power and volume buttons need a bit more pressure than usual, which is a good thing in my opinion. The phone seems to have comparable durability to none toughened phones. This could be corrected by adding a cheap gel case. (Don't get ripped off by the JCB version which only has a gel protector in addition to the phone.)

Operation
The touchscreen is less responsive than equivalent HTC's and Samsungs. It works fine but sometime needs more positive pressure than I am used to. Processor power is adequate, if you are used to powerful phones then you may notice it slowing on heavy applications. The phone has plenty of application memory. It does not have internal storage but comes with a 2gig micro SD card. Battery is nothing special, it will need charging every night. GPS gets a very fast lock but accurate positioning is equivalent to other phones.

Motorola Blur
Motorola are a bit misleading about this "feature". It integrates with the account manager in android and in addition to the standard features adds a front end for Twitter and Facebook. This is not needed, you are better using full applicaitons for social networking. It also creates a Motorola account which enables the user to locate and wipe the phone remotly (if you can find it on the Motorola website). The best part is that it locks the phone if the SIM is changed, remember your username and password!

Summary

Looses two stars because of the flimsy USB cover, unresponsive touch screen, battery life and search button location.

It will probably survive a quick dunking but will need some TLC after to make sure it's dried out. The Android build is one of the best I have seen for version 2.3 and includes some very well though out features. Accessories are more limited than other brands. If you need a waterproof phone consider waiting for the next round which should be appearing soon.

This phone is becoming dated, search around for a good deal.

Update:

The phone comes with pre-installed 7digital music player/market. The application downloads background data over 3g adn cannot be uninstalled or blocked. It consumes upto 3mb per day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mobile phone that provides, internet, email, and diary, 24 July 2012

This is great phone with a battery that seems to just go on and on and there are so many features. It is useful because it is a good information, communication and research tool; it provides useable phone, internet browser, SMS, Text, email and contact tools which are easily set up. I have deliberately delayed submitting a review until the phone had been used over a period of time, as a review without using the phone would be useless to any other intended buyer. I have had the phone since 7th March, and really like it. The voice reproduction is clear; the touch screen is bright and sensitive and almost fills the facial area as the screen surround is only as bulky as is necessary rather than being made large enough to reduce manufacturing costs. (Plastic is cheaper than touch screen for so many phones). Easy to personalise and use, it is used by my wife who is not a techy and it is true to say we both really like it. The crucial part of the review is that it is in constant use since we received it and it has functioned without a glitch. No battery or software problems in four months. I have had more problems with ordinary mobile phones which had no other feature(s) than to communicate speech. Another important factor is the price which I consider to be good value for money.

I got this Defy and got water inside. Warranty all of a sudden was no valid, since it doesn't cover internal damage by water.

Then, sensitivity of the screen is not very good and size of keyboard is small for any finger.
