5.0 out of 5 stars Windows Phone 8 doesn't get any better than this, 5 Feb 2013

The Ativ S is, simply, THE best WP8 handset. Yes, Nokia has devices with better cameras, and HTC's offering are brighter. The Ativ S is a business grade device - it's the pro of the WP8 ecosystem. If you want a WP8 handset that screams "look at me", buy a Nokia 820 or HTC 8X, but if you want a premium handset, get the Ativ S.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Phone Ever!, 4 Feb 2013

This review is from: Samsung ATIV S Smartphone with Windows 8 UK SIM FREE 16 GB - Aluminium Silver (Electronics)
This is my second Windows 8 Samsung Ative S phone in 30 days, the reason why is that I have damaged the sim card entry in the first one and could not wait for the Samsung service centre to fix, therefore I found my self sacrificing the big price tag and buying it again.
It is everything I have ever wanted in a phone, and by the way am a Mac User; from laptop, to desktop through the iPhone and the iPad and lived all the generations too! And after reading reviews about the windows 8 I have decided to give it a try... the touch screen is very responsive, and the phone OS is very solid. The reason why I have chose this phone is the home button as am an iPhone user and cannot miss the home button. Also it has a place for a micro SD card, I use 32GB. In all means the phone is perfect and exciting, in my opinion it is better than any phone that Samsung did... the screen size is perfect and saves me the trouble of having to carry another device for web browsing ... 4.8 screen size is perfect. The touch and feel of the phone build is great, Aluminium Silver colour, and brushed chrome finish at back, makes it look very nice although plastic back cover. Also the live tiles in windows 8 is a great feature.
The Microsoft skydrive feature in windows 8 with free 25GB storage make it easier to have all devices sync and my exchange server email works smooth although all my email accounts are installed and up & running.

I also use an HTC 8X for my other line, but honestly any phone without a home button that physically you can push ... is not worth it... also the HTC is limited to built in storage with no add-on storage micro SD card... I have no clue why?

I like the Samsung Ativ S windows 8 phone, and I think that the operating system accompanied with the well designed phone made me give this phone 5/5.

This review would be 5 stars but my first phone seemed to have a fault with the sound so I got it sent back and got a replacement in really quick time. The phone is really good, superb screen quality and size. The phone itself is ridiculously light and slim. The Windows Phone 8 software is also really good, integrates a lot of common features and through the use of hubs makes it very easy to stay connected. Overall great phone and service from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough Decision to Choose Between Samsung ATIV S and HTC 8X, 20 Jan 2013

As a fan of Windows Phone from day one over two years ago, it was relatively easy then to pick a Windows Phone handset; I had no difficulty in choosing my first Windows Phone 7 which was HTC HD7 and glad to say it's still as new - thanks to the protective screen cover and soft gel case I put to use upon unpacking my HD7.

With significant improvements made possible with Windows Phone 8, and now more choices from several quarters - not only HTC and Samsung, also Nokia now a big player, and the Chinese getting noticed, for instance with ZTE Tania model - as well as the multi models of the same brand, it may not be that easy to choose one handset over the other. Case in point - Samsung ATIV S and HTC 8X are the two Windows Phones I like most, but really tough to choose one over the other.

Main Reasons why I like Samsung ATIV S over HTC 8X:
- Removable higher capacity 2300mAh Li-Ion battery (versus internally fixed 1800mAh Li-Polymer for HTC 8X)
- Bigger screen size (4.8" versus 4.3")
- Extended memory through microSD/SDHC/SDXC card up to 32GB, means 16GB internal storage + 32GB extended (versus 16GB internal storage only for HTC 8X)
- Talk time up to 13.5 hrs (better by about 2 hours than HTC 8X)
- Latest Bluetooth 4.0 (versus 2.1 for HTC 8X)

Main Reasons why I like HTC 8X over Samsung ATIV S:
- Supports 4G LTE network (versus no 4G support but 3.5G network for ATIV S).
- Very sharp and bright screen quality as widely reported for HTC 8X (but ATIV S also has a better contrast which is as important).
- Marginally better multimedia experiences (pictures, music, video) according to some test labs.
- Less expensive than ATIV S

This is ignoring very minor differences such as 1.9MPix vs 2.1MPix front camera, 135g vs. 130g weight, and subjective factors such as the look and feel of handset body and contour.

While the reasons for ATIV S are all quite significant for me (particularly being able to use spare batteries while on travel, as well as the two important reasons that follow this one), the only sticking point for the HTC 8X is the 4G support which may be regarded as a feature that makes a Windows phone more future-proof.

After some time of indecision I finally opted for the ATIV S, somewhat convinced by the fact that the 3G/3.5G mobile broadband service will be with us for years to come and the 4G LTE is just at the initial pilot launch in major UK cities (by EE and O2) with full coverage estimated beyond 2014. Interestingly, the US and Canadian version of ATIV S does support 4G LTE and not clear why Samsung decided to exclude this feature for the UK version.

This is a Windows Phone 8 handset packed with all desirable features but somewhat let down by the lack of 4G LTE connectivity, though it has to be said not a major disaster as 3.5G HSPA+ is supported (and we may not even notice much difference between 3.5G and 4G mobile broadband for years to come).

Highly Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Phone slightly let down by missing features, 15 Jan 2013

As a commuter I use my phone for entertainment a lot. This hardware is superb, fast and the screen is gorgeous. It takes micro SDXC cards so I have added SanDisk 64GB Mobile Ultra MicroSDXC Memory Card with SD Adapter. I will add more as bigger sizes come out. The battery easily lasts all day despite several email accounts, WIFI etc. all being active and watching films and listening to podcasts to and from work.

Windows Phone 8 is slick and a joy to use, but outside the US the podcast feature has been removed and the available podcast apps are a bit poor. Also BBC iPlayer and 4OD etc. are not supported. Neither is flash. Fingers crossed that these issues will be addressed in a future update, because there's no way I'm going back to my iPhone ;-)

5.0 out of 5 stars my iPhone seems so old fashioned now!, 14 Jan 2013

For many years I have always seen myself as a gadget tester, I had the original and the subsequent iPhones to which at the time were ground breaking, every once in a while something comes along and sets a new standard and this time Microsoft wins hands down.
After coming to the conclusion that everyone now has a iPhone, I thought it was time to look around, bought an Android phone some months back then a windows 7.5 mobile.

After a great deal of researching and testing many phones, you cannot beat the new windows phone 8 platform and the Samsung ativ S.
The phone is virtually identical to the Galaxy S3 but with a beautiful metallic faux finish, windows button and the amazing operating system windows phone 8.

The Screen is beautiful and the live tiles to which you can customise to your size is brilliant. the speech recognition is fantastic, honestly i would have to say this is the best phone I have ever owned. No longer do I feel like a lemon, following the masses on the iOS platform or android, but now feel like a pioneer with a new device that works so brilliantly. Yeah apps on the store for microsoft are a bit pricey but its new and not a lot of people are catching on yet. Please give a windows phone 8 some serious consideration they are most amazing! And twinned with Samsung this phone is beautiful, sexy fully functional perfection and worth every penny!

Come on be a trend setter and not a sheep!

Love this phone. Great screen in terms of size, resolution and colour vibrancy. Black levels are dead black. Looks gorgeous, feels great, well made. Windows Phone 8 is a wonderful OS and so unique compared to Android and iPhone. Highly recommended!

I went from a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (android) to a HTC 8x windows 8 phone, then saw this beauty from Samsung, the Ativ S, and had to have one.
I love the tile system. Apps are OK, for my use anyway.
Just one little niggle, you cant change the message tone like you can the ringtone. (If anyone knows different, can you tell me how?).
Apart from that, I love it.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST AND BIGGEST WINDOWS 8 PHONE, 4 Jan 2013

I have been using the HTC HD7 windows 7.5 phone since I made the jump from the IPhone for about a year now. I was a little disappointed when Microsoft announced that that they wouldn't be upgrading the current wp7 to wp8, however with all the new enhancements to WP8 I couldnt wait to change to WP8. I didnt like the offerings from Nokia and HTC but when I saw the that Samsung ATiv S it was love at 1st sight. I liked the fact it looked like a grown up phone, it was light and slim and shared it styling and looks to that of the galaxy SIII.

so here are the pros,
* very fast and responsive.
* Bright HD 4.8 inch super AmoLED screen.
* Nice to hold
* Super slim and light
* large capacity removable battery
* Expandable memory up to 32gig MicroSD card
* Samsung Zone (apps)
* Copy files from the PC directly to the phone(no need for ZUNE)

Cons
* No LTE 4G
* Cost more than the the NOKIA and the HTC offerings
* It could have done with something like nokia maps
* The Samsung app Zone could have offered more apps

I don't really have any grips about the lack of apps since i can find most of the apps I use on a day to day basis... Lets face it realistically how many apps we use on a regular basis, however that said its still a great device and Samsung as ensured that it fits right along side its Android brothers with the same look, feel, wallpaper and performance... Just be aware that it takes a micro sim ( I had to pay to get my stardard sim converted )

I switched to Microsoft because I liked the live tiles and the tight social integration it also comes with office and sky drive which makes so much sense if you already use windows 8. The kids corner is great for protecting your data from your young ones and the battery life is good.... It also makes a great business phone with it's smart aluminum silver colour.
So if your looking for an alternative to IOS why not give this a try... Yes its windows but they have come along way since the days of the clunky stylus based windows Mobile.

My name is Tony and the Samsung Ativ s is my Windows phone
