Really nice little phone - I had the Samsung S3 before but this is equally well designed (if not so powerful). Alongside a cheap sim only deal tgis makes a real bargain compared to those 2 year contracts.

This is my third android phone, first was HTC Hero, then HTC Desire HD (which died after 1.5yr for no reason). I also considered the Samsung Galaxy S3, S3 mini and the Note 1&2 as well as the Nokia Lumia series. Even briefly considered an iPhone5 until I saw the Sim-free price and had a panic attack.
In my opinion, between 150 and 200 quid this is pretty much unbeatable. Had a good play with it and can't fault it much. Here are the positives as I see it:
1) Cheap for a sim-free android phone
2) Light and compact, unlike some gargantuan monsters available.
3) Very crisp and bright screen, I can't make out individual pixels so effectively "retina"
4) Very slick and responsive interface, no lag at all prob thanks to the dual-core processor
5) Takes a cheap microSD to store all your pics/video/music
6) Screen/phone size is great compromise between pocketability and useable real-estate (noticeably bigger than iPhone4)
7) Serious sized battery for enough juice on the go
8) Very compact charger (euro version)
9) Will receive an Android 4.1 upgrade in the new year courtesy of Samsung
10) Google android Play market trumps App store and Nokia/Windows for range of useable and low cost/free apps.
11) Google maps right out of the box unlike the ridiculous IOS6
12) Connectivity: Wifi-direct, Bluetooth, Wifi-hotspot
13) GPS chip and navigation
14) HD video playback is really decent and easy to copy over from a PC (unlike Apple stuff)
15) Camera is good enough for A4 document scans and has flash
16) Front facing camera for Skype etc
17) Looks well made and fairly premium
18) Plastic construction more likely to survive a drop and other punishment
19) Android OS allows you to access folders of files and doesn't cripple really useful apps like Dropbox unlike IOS.

Negatives:
1) no Near Field Comms chip
2) doesn't support Apple airplay
3) Comes with a few unnecessary apps you can't delete
4) No auto-brightness
5) Built-in speaker a bit feeble (for music etc)

Checked a few online reviews of this phone and it has been heavily scored down as it has an older Android version Gingerbread (2.3). This still actually works great and Samsung have in any case announced a 4.1 update for this phone in due course. The camera is not as superior as an iPhone4/5 but then this is less than 1/3 of the price!

3.0 out of 5 stars speakerphone not loud, manual not helpful, Kies software a problem, 18 Dec 2012

If you need a review by a techie, looks elsewhere. This is my first smartphone, replacing a Nokia 2720 fold and I only use my mobile for phoning and texting. So is this smartphone better than my archaic Nokia fold? Well the screen is much larger in size and resolution: this would be significantly advantageous for browsing and pictures, but is also better for texting and now I have individual (virtual) keys for each letter! The ability to change screen orientation is also a bonus as on landscape orientation the letter keys are larger. Compared with my previous Nokia fold the ringtone is a bit louder and the vibration is certainly stronger but the speakerphone does not seem to be any louder: I always find very difficult to compare phones on these important features before you buy them. Navigating the various menus is easier with smartphones like this. A specific feature that I liked of this phone is the low SAR (lower than that in many competitors): the jury is still out on what could be the long-term consequences of high levels of exposures.
The manual is not that helpful though: it does not tell you how long it will take to recharge the battery (I found out it takes about 3 hours) and does not really tell you how to extend the battery stand-by time. The officially declared stand-by times are 670 h (2G) or 640 h (3G). To my surprise the battery initially did not last 48 hours (with no calls/texts and no other use other than a daily check for received messages) despite having selected all the Custom power saving options by ticking to turn off wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS & Sync (when not in use) and in the mobile networks network mode having selected "GSM only". My previous Nokia fold with my low usage would stay charged for 6-7 days! I then downloaded a firmware update and more importantly, I discovered by checking task manager that there were 2 open applications: it seems that if you ever check your internet e-mails it keeps downloading them. Since closing all applications, I fully recharged the phone more than 4 days ago and the battery is still > 50% charged (I only made a few calls and text messages).
For transferring my contact details I used the Samsung Kies software: installation was not straightforward and I had to repeat it. Transferring the contacts was easier though no clear instructions are given on how best to manage contact details thus transferred into the phone as opposed to those in the SIM. More importantly after installing Kies my SanDisk cruzer USB memory sticks no longer worked with my desktop: it seems that this is a well-known problem and you can resolve this by starting Task Manager and "ending" Kies trayagent in the list of processes. Now my SanDisk memory sticks work again but I have not had time to find out whether Kies is still fully functional.
On the whole I have mixed views: the handset is good, solid and easy to use but the speakerphone is not very loud and the instruction manual is not very helpful. The software Kies also seems to create problems.

I'm so very pleased with this phone. It's a great shape, size and weight. The screen is clear and the navigation user friendly. I'd definitely recommend it

I wanted a sim-free phone for my son because we already had a very good existing sim card deal. He wanted a smartphone with far more functionally than his original phone. Samsung phones seem to be the talk of the school so we decided on this model as it was a good mid range price compared to such as the Galaxy SIII. First ever sim free phone I've purchased so I was expecting problems with needing loads of codes and passwords. However within 10 mins of inserting the sim and switching it on it was ready to use including e-mail. It all seems very intuitive and my son says he prefers it to my IPhone. I would certainly buy Samsung and sim free again. Purchased it from Axazon at a little bit more money than elsewhere purely for sense of security.

This is an excellent phone far exceeding my expectations. It is easy to use, intuitive, with a good screen display and a decent camera. In my opinion it is easily the equal of other more expensive phones I considered. Why spend more when this is available?

There is absolutely no way of connecting to Samsung Kies for updates, transferring music downloads, photos, and synching contacts etc. You just get a message saying, "device not supported". A quick Google verifies a huge number of other people driven to distraction by the same problem. There are an equally huge number of supposed cures, some of them extremely complex, a few of which seem to have worked for a small number of people - often on a temporary basis. I've spent approx 10 hours searching for, and trying, them all but to no avail which appears to put me in the majority. I have given up on it to preserve my sanity. I just hope that when the long awaited update to Jellybean is issued it doesn't depend on Kies for installation.

I was also very disappointed with the camera when used indoors. It struggles for long seconds attempting to focus and when it finally does it produces a washed out and fuzzy effort. I actually got better results from my old Samsung Solid Immerse shooting at a lowly 2 megapix.
